IGA Hometown Healthy Challenge Perspective

March 9, 2010

IGA Hometown Healthy Challenge is underway, and IGA Retailers around the country are increasing the impact of the event by adding activities tailored for their communities. Today, Tera Trask, marketing and training coordinator at Granite Falls IGA, shares how her store planned a three-pronged event that culminated in a successful health fair.

For this year's Hometown Healthy Challenge we wanted to create even more excitement than last year, so we developed a three-pronged plan that would give our community a chance to participate in lots of activities. Our first two events—a weight-loss challenge and fruits and vegetables eating challenge for kids—were definitely a big hit, but it was our recent health fair that really brought it on home.

We knew that promotion of the health fair would be extremely important if we wanted to get the community involved, so we worked with our Licensed Distribution Center to create professional-looking flyers and collateral materials. These bag suffers and in-store signs helped us get the word out, as did our employees, who promoted the event at the check stand.

When the event rolled around we had a great turn-out from the community. Throughout the day we had a number of free health-related activities, including in-store blood pressure monitoring, five-minute massages, spinal posture analysis, a specialist who showed customers how NeuroCranial restructuring therapy can be used to treat a variety of chronic problems, and a Naturopathic doctor who presented information on how proper nutrition and healthy foods can be used to prevent and treat disease. We also gave out lots of healthy snacks and sampled healthy recipes throughout the store.

Overall, this year's event has been a great success, and customer participation continues to grow as our event goes on. It's amazing to be able to take a hands-on approach to improving health and wellness in our community, and Hometown Healthy Challenge is a great opportunity to do so!
