Today, Trena Hartsell, event administrator at Bailey's IGA, shares how their store celebrated national dairy month in a very unique way.
June was National Dairy Month, and that's an important time in Washington dairy towns like the ones we serve. With so many farmers in our area, we really wanted to be able to get them involved in our events and to show them that they are supported by their IGA and their community. Last year, teams at our two stores in Morton and Rochester got together to brainstorm and throw some ideas against the wall to see what would stick. We finally came up with the idea of having a "Moo Off" contest where participants could compete to see who could produce the most authentic mooing sound. Last year's event was a big success, so we decided we'd do it again in 2010, only bigger and better this time.
This year, we held our second annual Moo Off event on the last Saturday in June, and we pulled out all the stops. A local dairy farmer brought out some baby cows for inspiration, and we had mooing contests in four different age categories. We gave away some great dairy products like ice cream, string cheese, yogurt and cookie dough, and picked our winning moo-ers, each of which will be featured in an upcoming radio commercial on a local station!
This event is a fun way to celebrate our town's heritage and culture, and to show our appreciation for our neighbors—and customers—who work as dairy farmers. It didn't take much to pull everything together, but it's something that will have the town talking—and mooing—for weeks to come.
