Making a Difference with IGA

 February 8, 2012

In preparation for next week's 2012 Awards of Excellence Banquet at the IGA Global Rally in Las Vegas, The Independent View today profiles IGA USA International Retailer of the Year Brooks Marsh. Read on to learn why Marsh believes IGA is important to his retailing success.

For me, being IGA all comes down to one thing: "Hometown Proud." I got into retailing after working on the distribution side for most of my career because I wanted to be closer to the shoppers. I wanted to provide a service that people need. I wanted to be a part of community and make a difference in that community. And I wanted to spend my days—and by that I mean every day—out on the floor of the store talking to my friends and neighbors. There are a lot of ways to approach being a grocery retailer—I could have gone out on my own without a brand or I could have chosen a different brand--but after working with IGA retailers on the wholesale side, there really was no doubt in my mind that I'd hang my hat on IGA. IGA retailers wanted and believed in the same things I did, and I knew that was the retailing family for me.

The fact that our brand is truly based around the idea of serving others is something that really means a lot to me, both as a retailer and a person. We do a lot to bring that spirit of giving to life on our own, but IGA corporate also does a great job of incorporating it into every program it creates, whether it's giving back to the shoppers through marketing programs, through a website that keeps people informed about what's going on in their hometown, or to your employees with training.

There are those moments every day when an IGA retailer has an opportunity to brighten someone's day and truly make a difference in their life. It's what the brand is all about, it's why we love retail, and it's why we love IGA.

Thank you,

Brooks Marsh
