JDRF Day 5

June 21, 2011 - Race Day 4

The team hit some great tailwinds in Kansas, averaging speeds in excess of 30mph. The crew deals with a broken down van and rushing to a UPS store for a bike part minutes before the store closes.

 June 20, 2011 - Race Day 3

On day 3, Team JDRF IGA faces the Rockies. Steep climbs and 60mph descents keep the team busy throughout this leg of their 3,000 mile cross country, ocean-to-ocean bike race.

June 19, 2011 - Race Day 2

On day 2, Team JDRF IGA perseveres. After the steep ascent through Oak Creek Canyon, the team successfully navigated through the tricky turns of Flagstaff, Ariz., without incident. They had to dodge cattle and coyotes through Navajo country late last night, and today they're starting their uphill battle against the Rockies. Go JDRF IGA! No sleep 'til Annapolis!

JDRF Day 1

June 17 - Race Preparation

Team JDRF IGA, a 16-person tandem bike team that includes two IGA retailers, gears up for the 30th annual Race Across America (RAAM), racing 3,000 miles from Oceanside, Calif., to Annapolis, Md. The team has an impressive dual goal: To raise money and awareness for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)...and set a new world record by being the first tandem bike team in RAAM history to cross the country in six days or less!

JDRF Intro

June 16, 2011

This June marks the 30th anniversary for the world’s toughest bicycle race, the 3,000 mile Race Across America (RAAM) where cyclist from all over the world race non-stop from Oceanside, California to Annapolis, Maryland. (visit raceacrossamerica.org for more information)

Team JDRF IGA is a team of tandem cyclists who joined RAAM to race for their cause, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Team captain Tim Skipper is a RAAM veteran. With an astonishing nine RAAM finishes, he also holds the title for the most different team category victories in RAAM team competition history. With his help, Team JDRF IGA hopes to raise both awareness and funds for JDRF, an international research organization that is aimed at improving the lives of people with type 1 diabetes, and ultimately stopping the progression of this terrible disease that currently affects as many as 3 million people in America alone.
