Driving Growth of Fresh Foods

 February 13, 2013

Fresh departments are the single most important point of differentiation for the independent operator in today's marketplace, and not surprisingly, a prolific topic of interest and conversation at The N.G.A. Show. One of the most impactful of those conversations was the result of the Super Breakfast Session sponsored by IGA in morning.

Brian Silberman, President and CEO of the Produce Marketing Association, began the session by touching on the trends driving fresh growth throughout the industry, including culinary influence, ethnic roots of a changing population, and an increased focus on nutrition and health to name only a few. From there, Brian introduced a produce-focused retailer/wholesaler/supplier panel, including IGA Retailer Advisory Board Member Allen Milam, owner of four Milam's Markets IGAs in South Florida.

The panel explored ways in which each of them is working to improve merchandising and grow sales in a changing retail environment. Allen, the only retailer on the panel, was lauded for being a longtime innovator in both ethnic and locally grown produce, and for his efforts over the years to create relationships and processes that ensure his store provides the very best produce it can offer.

In Allen's words, "It's our job to work together to ensure that the produce is at its best all the way through the final and most important perception—when the consumer tastes the product."
