Look to The Independent View in the coming days to learn more about the Finalists in the running to become one of three 2014 IGA USA International Retailers of the Year. Today, Jim Shook of Lake Region IGA shares the retailing philosophy and "best practices" that set his IGA apart from the competition.

Here at Lake Region IGA we are a family of coworkers who all come together to achieve a common goal: to make this store an indispensable resource for our community. That means providing safe, quality groceries at an affordable price, of course, but it's also more than that. It's also about trying to make a difference in the lives of the people who live and work in this community. We pride ourselves on getting to know our loyal customers, and knowing their needs both in the store and out of it.

Our hometown proud approach to everything we do is how our Lake Region Community Dock Foundation began. Through the foundation, customers can donate 1 percent of their total sales to the charity of their choosing on a quarterly basis.

In addition to the money that is collected through sales, annual in-store events also provide a way for us to raise money for the foundation, like this year's extremely successful KidsFest, Classic Car Show and our Hometown Pride Ride, a 77-mile, non-stop motorcycle ride. Combining all three events into a one-day event benefitting local emergency services and our Community Dock Foundation meant that the entire community wanted to be involved. With just a modest admission price, we were able to raise more than $9,185. Of that total, $2,500 each was presented in the name of the foundation to two families who have come across hard times, and the remaining money was presented to local EMS services.

Our customers love shopping with us because they love being a part of something that allows them to nurture their community. Giving back has always been a huge part of our culture here at Lake Region IGA, within the IGA Alliance itself, and somewhere along the way we've been able to make it a huge part of the community here in Hawley. It's a wonderful feeling to watch your community and your business grow together, and we attribute much of our success to this experience of being able to consistently give back to our community. It's a classic embodiment of our IGA Hometown Proud values, and that certainly sets us apart from every chain store around!
