IGA retailers across the country are joining forces this summer with Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) for the fourth annual IGA cause marketing opportunity. A number of events are planned to raise money and awareness for our nation's wounded service members, including the IGA-hosted golf outing held yesterday in Chicago. Today, IGA's Wayne Altschul shares how the IGA golf outing impacted attendees.

It was a great day of golf yesterday for the more than 100 retailers, wholesalers, Red Oval partners and vendors who showed up in Chicago for the IGA Golf Outing, but the real story here is about our time spent with the 12 wounded service members in attendance.

Throughout the day we laughed and joked with the warriors on the golf course, then at the dinner later that night we had the true privilege of hearing their stories. When WWP spokesman Deven Schei told us first about his brother's injuries while in service to our country, and then later his own while serving in Afghanistan, everyone began to realize just how important IGA's WWP initiative truly is. Deven shared with us how dealing with the injuries that almost caused the loss of his leg and post-traumatic stress resulting from leaving his unit behind nearly drove him to suicide, and how the camaraderie and help he found through WWP gave him the strength he needed to rebuild his life.

The emotion in the room was simply overpowering, and it really was an experience none of us will ever forget.

Once again, the IGA golf tournament left all of us enlightened and rededicated to the WWP cause. I'd like to thank everyone who supported the event through sponsorship, attendance or both, and give a special thanks to Affiliated Foods Midwest for bringing their WWP tractor trailer for this special event. With everyone's generous support, we were able to raise nearly $20,000 for WWP in one event!

If you weren't able to be there, I would ask you to take a moment to visit the IGA WWP microsite to learn more about the program and see how your support is helping WWP. It will help you realize what we realized at this event: Our involvement with WWP is a unique and special opportunity that we're extremely lucky to be a part of.

Thank you WWP for allowing our IGA Alliance to have a positive impact on the lives of the people who have given so much to keep us safe.
