Alcohol Growth Surpasses CPG Averages, Basket Values Increase

In their weekly COVID-19 shopping insights, Nielsen reports that last week saw a continued slowdown in pantry loading with only single-digit growth. Alcohol (driven by whiskey, tequila and cognac) took the top department spot with growth that is surpassing CPG averages. Even after accounting for significant online growth, health and beauty has lost market share since COVID-19 started, as consumers shift spending to food and household care.

While consumers consolidate their trips both online and offline, basket values (especially online) experienced the largest increase this week since the start of COVID-19.
