2026 Retailer of the Year Spotlight: Matt Ladnier Delivers Big Volume in a Small Town

2026 marks the first time a Piggly Wiggly location has earned IGA Retailer of the Year honors, with Store Manager Matt Ladnier at the helm. Ladnier, who grew up shopping the same store as a child, leads a team serving a tight-knit town of roughly 4,000–5,000 people.

Despite operating on a smaller footprint than the competition, including one major chain and several smaller stores within a mile, the store punches above its weight through disciplined merchandising and a culture built on treating every associate, from part-time cashiers to veteran meat cutters, like family.

IGA CEO John Ross recently spoke with Matt about his 2026 honor and the risks the small town store takes to yield strong margins. Listen to the podcast below or keep reading for a recap.

Winning on training, not headcount. With a limited local labor pool, Matt's team stays in near-constant training mode and leans heavily on cross-training so the store never misses a beat when staff turnover hits.

Data-driven category decisions. Matt tracks item movement and shrink closely, using margin analysis to identify where the store can undercut competitors on staple items. This strategy has produced a standout win: a two-year run of Niagara water 24-packs at 4-for-$10, a price competitors couldn't match.

The Powerade promotion that made headlines. The interview's highlight: Matt's store outsold a warehouse store in Powerade during an IGA/Coca-Cola promotion, moving over $200,000 in product and prompting a call from Coca-Cola executives questioning how a small-town Mississippi store could post those numbers. Lines wrapped the building, registers ran at full capacity, and the mobile Coca-Cola warehouse was emptied more than once — with elevated sales continuing well after the promotion ended.

The takeaway for retailers and Red Oval partners. Matt's results reinforce a core IGA message: independents that act like entrepreneurs by leaning hard into the right offers and passing savings on to shoppers can outperform far larger competitors.

Matt and Piggly Wiggly Wiggins will be publicly recognized as a 2026 IGA USA Retailer of the Year at the Centennial Global Rally & Awards Gala, September 17–19 in Atlanta.
