Capital One announced last month its intentions to acquire Discover. This news has brought renewed interest to swipe fees and it’s time for our industry to set the record straight and tell Congress we need the Credit Card Competition Act now!

Megabanks and Wall Street lobbyists are spreading mistruths to lawmakers that the Capital One/Discover merger would lead to increased competition in the credit card marketplace, so there is no longer any need for the Credit Card Competition Act. This is false.

No merger can change Visa and Mastercard’s centrally set scheme of fees and prohibitions on competition – only legislation can. The Credit Card Competition Act would allow retailers to choose which networks to route their credit card transactions over, resulting in competition over fees, security, and service that is expected to save merchants and consumers over $15 billion a year.

Send a message to your lawmakers today that Congress must pass the Credit Card Competition Act and deliver much-needed relief to families and Main Street businesses.
