Retail Learning Institute Improves Food Retailer Training & Retention

Jul 31, 2024

In today's fast-paced retail environment, the need for continuous learning and employee retention is more critical than ever. IGA's Retail Learning Institute is at the forefront of addressing these needs, launching innovative programs to support food retailers globally.

The Retail Learning Institute (RLI)'s microlearning program breaks down complex subjects into bite-sized, easily digestible pieces that can be consumed quickly and conveniently. Employees can access training materials on their smartphones or tablets, allowing them to learn during short breaks or downtime. This flexibility ensures that training is integrated seamlessly into their daily routines, leading to better retention of information and more effective application of skills on the job.

Boosting Retention with Microlearning

Another goal with the microlearning program? Enhancing employee retention. This initiative is designed to tackle high turnover rates.

“Since forgetting is a normal, physiological thing, it needs to be taken into account when training. Interval reinforcement is a scientifically validated technique for increasing knowledge retention and changing behavior,” said Retail Learning Institute President and CEO Dr. Paulo Goelzer.

The program includes comprehensive training modules that cover various aspects of the retail business, from customer service to management skills. These modules are not only informative but also interactive, allowing employees to engage with the material in a meaningful way.

"The goal is to provide employees with the tools they need to succeed in their roles and feel valued in their positions, which will increase the likelihood of staying with the company longer," Goelzer said.

Microlearning in Action

Harp's Food Stores, Inc. launched their first microlearning stream in 2023 to reinforce their cashiers' behaviors when checking their customers. Director of Training & Leadership Development Bob Arthur said the program quickly met those goals.

"The program analytics are fantastic and guide us to make necessary adjustments," Arthur added. "As we grow in our utilization of microlearning, it will be an integral part of our learning processes.”

The Future of Retail Training

These RLI initiatives demonstrate a commitment to advancing the skills and satisfaction of food retail employees. By focusing on retention and introducing innovative learning methods like microlearning, the Institute is setting a new standard for retail training.

"Retailers who embrace these programs can look forward to a more knowledgeable, skilled, and dedicated workforce, ultimately leading to improved business outcomes and customer satisfaction," Goelzer said.
